Stop Having to Step In Every Few Minutes at Playtime. A Simple Independent Play System for Toddlers Ages 2–5

When I first opened the system, I expected I’d have to read a lot before I could even start. It was actually the opposite. I understood what to do pretty quickly, picked one small step, and tried it that same day.

I get overwhelmed easily when a resource has too much information, but this felt really clear and well organized. I never felt like I had to understand everything all at once.

What I liked most was that I didn’t need to prepare anything complicated. I picked one card, used things we already had at home, and we were able to start right away.

At first, I thought there were a lot of different resources. Once I understood that each one is meant for a different moment, it became really simple. You definitely don’t need to use everything in one day.

I was worried it would be one of those parenting systems with a long list of rules, but it feels really flexible. I just use the part that fits what I need that day and go from there.

Even on busy days, I can quickly look at the Planner or the Decision Tool and figure out what to focus on next. It doesn’t take a lot of time or mental energy to use.

The guidance is simple enough that I don’t second-guess whether I’m doing it right. It gives me clear direction without making me feel like I have to follow a strict routine.

The first change I noticed was that my daughter could stay with her play a little longer without coming back to me every minute. It didn’t happen all at once, but there’s a clear difference in how she starts and continues playing on her own.

I used to feel like I had to step in constantly to keep play going. Now I have a much better sense of when to help and when to wait, and my son is starting to handle more of those moments on his own.

The result I’m happiest about is that my daughter doesn’t ask me ‘What should I do now?’ nearly as often. She’s started coming up with her own ideas and continuing the play in her own way, which I wasn’t seeing before.

The change for us was gradual, but it was real. At first, my son would stop playing as soon as I moved away. Now there are times I can go do something else and come back to find him still happily engaged.

I didn’t realize at first that part of the change would come from adjusting how I responded too. Once I started following the steps and giving her a little more time before stepping in, play became calmer and she started trying more things on her own.

The best part is that I’m noticing progress I probably would have missed before. The Planner helped me see that my son really is needing less help during some activities, even if the changes are small.

For me, the result isn’t just that he plays more independently. Playtime feels less stressful for both of us. I’m not trying to guide every minute anymore, and he has more space to explore and keep going in his own way.
